SMITH EDWARD E.
Edward Elmer Smith, también conocido como E. E. Smith o Doc Smith, nació el 2 de mayo de 1890 en Sheboygan, Wisconsin, Estados Unidos. Fue ingeniero químico egresado de la Universidad de Idaho en 1914 y obtuvo un máster en química por la Universidad George Washington en 1917 y un doctorado en 1918. Tras trabajar como químico en la industria alimentaria, especializándose en mezclas de repostería, comenzó a escribir ciencia ficción gracias a la colaboración de una vecina que puso los pasajes románticos en su primera novela Skylark of Space, publicada finalmente en Amazing Stories tras años de envíos y revisiones. Se casó el 5 de octubre de 1915 en Boise, Idaho, con Jeanne Craig MacDougall, con quien tuvo tres hijos: Roderick, Verna Jean y Clarissa, cuyo nombre inspiró el de la protagonista de Lensman. Es considerado el padre de la space opera por sus series Skylark y Lensman, que establecieron las bases del género con sus aventuras interestelares y batallas galácticas. Falleció de un infarto agudo de miocardio el 31 de agosto de 1965 en Seaside, Oregón. Su legado pervive en la ciencia ficción moderna y en premios como el Skylark que la Asociación de Ciencia Ficción de Nueva Inglaterra otorga en su honor.
