Howard Phillips Lovecraft 1890-1937 , más conocido como H. P. Lovecraft, fue un escritor estadounidense considerado uno de los grandes innovadores del relato de terror. Nacido y fallecido en Providence, Rhode Island, creó una mitología propia -los Mitos de Cthulhu- que dio origen al subgénero del horror cósmico. Su obra se caracteriza por una atmósfera de misterio, seres ancestrales y dimensiones desconocidas, alejándose del terror tradicional para explorar lo insignificante del ser humano frente a un universo indiferente. Entre sus relatos más conocidos se encuentran La llamada de Cthulhu, En las montañas de la locura y El caso de Charles Dexter Ward. Aunque fue poco reconocido en vida y murió en la pobreza, su legado ha influido profundamente en la literatura, el cine, los videojuegos y la cultura popular.
