Patricia Highsmith nació el 19 de enero de 1921 en Fort Worth, Texas, y fue criada principalmente por su abuela en Nueva York. Estudió literatura inglesa en Barnard College y comenzó a publicar relatos en revistas antes de dedicarse a la novela. Su debut fue Extraños en un tren en 1950, obra que Alfred Hitchcock adaptó al cine y que la lanzó a la fama. Creó al personaje Tom Ripley, protagonista de varias de sus novelas más reconocidas. Vivió en distintos países de Europa y mantuvo una vida privada reservada. Murió el 4 de febrero de 1995 en Locarno, Suiza.
