HODGSON BURNETT FRANCES

Frances Eliza Hodgson Burnett es una escritora de origen británico que posteriormente se nacionalizó estadounidense. Fue una autora muy prolífica, su legado cuenta con más de 50 novelas, relatos cortos y 13 obras de teatro.
Su infancia estuvo marcada por la muerte de su padre, que falleció cuando Frances tenía cinco años. Desde entonces, su familia atravesó un periodo de penurias y crisis económica, y Frances quedó a cargo de su abuela, que fomentó su interés por la lectura y la naturaleza.
En 1865, emigró con su madre y sus hermanos a Estados Unidos para residir con otros familiares. Allí comenzó su carrera literaria publicando en revistas como Scribner's monthly o Harper's Bazaar. El dinero que ganaba con la publicación de sus escritos le permitía garantizar ingresos regulares y eso fue la motivación para que empezara a escribir historias.
Fue madre devota de dos hijos que le sirvieron de inspiración para sus propias novelas. Se casó en dos ocasiones, aunque por razones profesionales mantuvo el apellido de su primer esposo, el doctor Swann Moses Burnett.
En la actualidad, es conocida y muy valorada por sus novelas dirigidas a un público infantil y juvenil entre las que destacan El pequeño lord Fauntleroy, La princesita y especialmente El jardín secreto. Su estilo elegante y su gran capacidad de observación son la clave del éxito de su larga serie de novelas que hicieron de Frances Hodgson una autora consagrada en su época e igualmente interesante en nuestros tiempos.
