Reconocido por sus novelas de espionaje y suspenso político como El día del chacal y El expediente Odessa, trabajó como periodista en Reuters y la BBC, y fue piloto de la Real Fuerza Aérea británica. Su estilo detallado y realista lo convirtió en uno de los grandes del género, junto a autores como John le Carré.
