6 de mayo de 1868, París - 15 de abril de 1927, Niza. Gaston Leroux fue un periodista y novelista francés que alcanzó la posteridad gracias a su obra maestra, El fantasma de la Ópera . Entre 1894 y 1906 recorrió el mundo como reportero, siendo testigo de los grandes acontecimientos de su época. Como novelista, consiguió su primer éxito con El misterio de la habitación amarilla , protagonizada por el joven reportero Joseph Rouletabille, quien hace las veces de detective aficionado. Leroux intentó sin fortuna repetir el éxito con otra aventura de Rouletabille, la también interesante: El perfume de la señora de negro . Sin embargo, fue El fantasma de la Ópera la obra que lo haría conocido en todo el mundo, especialmente a raíz de la adaptación cinematográfica que hizo el actor estadounidense Lon Chaney en 1925. Esta acertada mezcla de melodrama romántico, historia de venganza y novela gótica ha capturado la imaginación de millones de personas y, gracias a su conversión en musical en 1986, se ha convertido en un icono cultural.
