Beverley Naidoo nació el 21 de mayo de 1943 en Johannesburgo, Sudáfrica. Creció bajo el régimen del apartheid, lo que marcó profundamente su obra literaria. Fue encarcelada brevemente por su activismo político y se exilió en Inglaterra en 1965. Estudió en la Universidad de Witwatersrand y más tarde en el Reino Unido, donde desarrolló su carrera como escritora y educadora.
