A lo largo de su vida vivió en Vermont, Colorado, Inglaterra, Nuevo México, California, Tailandia y Vietnam, donde también enseñó inglés. Fue hijo de los autores R.A. Montgomery y Constance Cappel, y hermanastro de Anson Montgomery. Escribió varios libros de la serie Choose Your Own Adventure, como The Mona Lisa is Missing!, Grave Robbers, Outlaw Gulch y U.N. Adventure. Además, colaboró con proyectos educativos en Asia, como The Library Project, que busca construir bibliotecas accesibles en comunidades necesitadas.
