Por su larga y prestigiosa carrera académica, es conocido por ser el creador de El Hobbit, El Señor de los Anillos y El Silmarillion. Sus obras se han traducido a más de cuarenta idiomas en todo elmundo. Fue nombrado caballero del imperio británico y doctor honoris causa por la Universidad de Oxford en 1972.
