«La figura alargada, desaliñada, encorvada como la de un lémur, con una cara excepcionalmente fea». Así describe Friedrich Hebbel al célebre escritor danés, internacionalmente conocido por sus cuentos para niños, patito feo convertido en flamante cisne a través de la escritura. Hijo de un zapatero y una lavandera con una infancia marcada por la pobreza, huyó con apenas catorce años a Copenhague con la intención de convertirse en actor o cantante. Rechazado y tachado de lunático, solo encontró apoyo en Jonas Collin, director del Teatro Real, quien financió sus estudios y le abrió las puertas a la dramaturgia aunque sin mucho éxito. Fue en 1834 cuando aparecieron sus primeras narraciones, cuentos nacidos de la tradición oral, que le dieron la fama que buscaba. Numerosas fueron las cortes reales y mansiones aristocráticas que visitó para recitar sus historias. Soltero, sin amor y sin patria, hizo de sus viajes por el mundo una huida de la soledad, y narró sus experiencias en libros como El bazar de un poeta 1842 o Viaje por España 1863 . Siguió escribiendo sus cuentos para niños hasta 1872, tres años antes de su muerte tras una amarga enfermedad.
