Nací en St. Paul, Minnesota, el 2 de abril de 1978, el mayor de tres hermanos. He vivido en la zona de Minneapolis St. Paul toda mi vida; actualmente, justo al otro lado de la frontera con Wisconsin, a media hora al este de las Ciudades Gemelas.
Las Mentiras de Locke Lamora, mi primera novela, fue adquirida por Simon Spanton en Orion Books en agosto de 2004. Antes de eso, tuve prácticamente todos los trabajos que se suelen ver en este tipo de biografías de autor: lavaplatos, ayudante de camarero, camarero, diseñador web, gerente de oficina, cocinero y escritor independiente. Me formé en extinción de incendios básica en el Anoka Technical College en 2005 y me convertí en bombero voluntario en junio de ese mismo año.
En 2007, Las mentiras de Locke Lamora fue finalista del Premio Mundial de Fantasía.
