Perhaps the marker of a true mythos is when the stories themselves overshadow their creator. Originally published under a pseudonym as in The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent., The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Stories gave America its own haunted mythology. This collection of larger-than-life tales contains Washington Irving's best-known literary inventions-"Rip Van Winkle", "The Spectre Bridegroom" and, "The Angler"-that continue to capture our imagination until today.

IRVING WASHINGTON
Washington Irving nació el 3 de abril de 1783 en Nueva York, hijo de William Irving y Sarah Sanders. Estudió derecho y trabajó en despachos de abogados, aunque pronto se dedicó a la escritura. Desde 1802 colaboró en periódicos con artículos satíricos y en 1809 publicó Historia de Nueva York bajo el seudónimo Diedrich Knickerbocker. Viajó por Europa y residió en España, donde escribió Cuentos de la Alhambra en 1832. Fue diplomático y embajador de Estados Unidos en España entre 1842 y 1846. Autor de relatos como La leyenda de Sleepy Hollow y Rip Van Winkle, falleció el 28 de noviembre de 1859 en Tarrytown.
