Khaled Hosseini nació en Kabul, Afganistán, y se trasladó a Estados Unidos en 1980. Tanto su primera novela, Cometas en el cielo, como la posterior Mil soles espléndidos se convirtieron pronto en superventas internacionales y fueron publicados en más de cincuenta países. En 2006 fue nombrado embajador de buena voluntad del ACNUR Alto Comisionado de Naciones Unidas para los Refugiados .
