Khaled Hosseini nació en Kabul, Afganistán, y se trasladó a Estados Unidos en 1980. Tanto su primera novela, Cometas en el cielo, como la posterior Mil soles espléndidos se convirtieron pronto en superventas internacionales y fueron publicados en más de cincuenta países. En 2006 fue nombrado embajador de buena voluntad del ACNUR Alto Comisionado de Naciones Unidas para los Refugiados . En 2007 Khaled puso en marcha la Fundación Khaled Hosseini, destinada a proporcionar ayuda humanitaria al pueblo de Afganistán para aliviar su sufrimiento y contribuir a crear prósperas comunidades. Actualmente vive en el norte de California.
