Robert Ervin Howard nació el 22 de enero de 1906 en Peaster, Texas, Estados Unidos, y falleció el 11 de junio de 1936 en Cross Plains, Texas. Fue hijo único y desde joven mostró interés por la escritura, publicando sus primeros relatos en revistas pulp a partir de 1924. Estudió en Brownwood High School y asistió a Howard Payne University. Escribió en diversos géneros como espada y brujería, ficción histórica, horror, ciencia ficción, western y novela policíaca. Publicó en revistas como Weird Tales y creó personajes como Conan el Bárbaro. Utilizó el seudónimo Patrick Ervin.
