The Grammar Lab English level: Beginner to Intermediate Kenna Bourke Winner English-Speaking Union's Duke of Edinburgh Book Competition 2000 Description A lively, humorous and richly illustrated grammar series for children aged nine to twelve. Key features There are books at three levels of difficulty. The series is very flexible: it can be used alongside any coursebook or on its own, either in class or for homework. The chapters can be used in any order. It covers all the grammatical topics taught on most elementary English courses. Each chapter teaches one grammar point, except where it helps to contrast two related grammar points. Structures which have more than one use are covered in more than one chapter. Chapters vary in length according to how demanding the grammar topic is. Within each chapter, grammar rules are taught in short and easy stages. Every statement, explanation or instruction is addressed directly to the learner. There are simple exercises after every stage. At the end of the chapter there is a section of longer exercises which bring together all the grammar points taught in the chapter. They are mainly written exercises but there are also opportunities for oral work, games and other types of class activity. Revision notes are frequent and regular. 'Remember' boxes remind students of a grammar point that has already been introduced, and which students must remember to complete the exercise correctly. The 'Remember' box also tells students where they can find the grammar point explained. All the language used is in context. Every chapter begins with either a picture or a cartoon strip in which the target grammar is briefly presented in bold type. A simple 'tick the box' exercise follows the picture or cartoon to get students thinking about the grammar. Endearing characters and their funny dialogues entertain both children and their teachers. The full-colour pictures are by Korky Paul, the well-known children's artist, and the expert strip cartoonist David Mostyn. All the illustrations are of outstanding richness and quality. Each Student's Book is accompanied by a Teacher's Book with answers to the exercises in the Student's Books.
