Roald Dahl nació el 13 de septiembre de 1916 en Llandaff, Gales, en el seno de una familia de origen noruego. Tras una infancia marcada por la pérdida de su padre y su hermana, estudió en escuelas británicas y luego trabajó para una empresa petrolera en África. Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial fue piloto de combate en la Royal Air Force, experiencia que inspiró sus primeros relatos. En 1942 comenzó a escribir profesionalmente y alcanzó fama mundial con libros infantiles como Charlie y la fábrica de chocolate, Matilda y James y el melocotón gigante. Su estilo se caracteriza por el humor negro, la fantasía y personajes memorables. Falleció el 23 de noviembre de 1990 en Oxford, Inglaterra.
