Hans Christian Andersen 1805-1875 was born in Odense, the son of a shoemaker. His early life was wretched, but he was adopted by a patron and became a short-story writer, novelist and playwright, though he remains best-known for his magical fairy tales which were published between 1835 and 1872.
For 150 years his stories have been delighting both adults and children. Packed with a light-hearted whimsy combined with a mature wisdom they are as entrancing as ever. De origen muy humilde, Hans Christian Andersen 1805-1875 se fue pronto a la capital de su país, Copenhage, en busca de fortuna. Quería triunfar como actor y cantante, y aunque despertó el interés de algunos mecenas, que apoyaron su formación, acabó escribiendo y viajando mucho. Publicó poesía, teatro, novela y varios libros que recogían sus experiencias por Alemania, Gran Bretaña, Turquía, Suecia o España. Sin embargo, aquello que lo hizo famoso y mundialmente reconocido como autor, ya en vida, fueron sus cuentos infantiles, algunos inspirados en leyendas nórdicas pero la mayoría inventados por él. Son más de doscientos relatos repletos de imaginación, humor y gran sensibilidad que lo han convertido en uno de los grandes clásicos de la literatura infantil. Su obra, con títulos como El patito feo, La sirenita, El traje nuevo del emperador o La Reina de las Nieves continúa inspirando adaptaciones de todo tipo y es una de las más traducidas del mundo.
