Paul Auster is the bestselling author of Winter Journal, Sunset Park, Man in the Dark, The Brooklyn Follies, The Book of Illusions and The New York Trilogy, among many other works. In 2006 he was awarded the Prince of Asturias Prize for Literature and inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
Among his other honours are the Independent Spirit Award for the screenplay of Smoke and the Prix Médicis Étranger for Leviathan. He has also been shortlisted for both the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award The Book of Illusions and the PEN Faulkner Award for Fiction The Music of Chance . His work has been translated into more than forty languages.
He lives in Brooklyn, New York.
SYNOPSIS
The Book of Illusions, written with breath-taking urgency and precision, plunges the reader into a universe in which the comic and the tragic, the real and the imagined, and the violent and the tender dissolve into one another.
One man's obsession with the mysterious life of a silent film star takes him on a journey into a shadow-world of lies, illusions, and unexpected love. After losing his wife and young sons in a plane crash, Vermont professor David Zimmer spends his waking hours mired in grief. Then, watching television one night, he stumbles upon a lost film by silent comedian Hector Mann, and remembers how to laugh . . .
Mann was a comic genius, in trademark white suit and fluttering black moustache. But one morning in 1929 he walked out of his house and was never heard from again. Zimmer's obsession with Mann drives him to publish a study of his work; whereupon he receives a letter postmarked New Mexico, supposedly written by Mann's wife, and inviting him to visit the great Mann himself. Can Hector Mann be alive? Zimmer cannot decide - until a strange woman appears on his doorstep and makes the decision for him, changing his life forever.

Entre sus obras destacan La invención de la soledad 1982 ; La trilogía de Nueva York 1987 ; El Palacio de la Luna 1989 ; Leviatán 1992 ; Tombuctú 1999 ; El libro de las ilusiones 2002 ; La noche del oráculo 2003 ; Brooklyn Follies 2005 ; Sunset Park 2010 ; Diario de invierno 2012 ; 4 3 2 1 2017 ; La llama inmortal de Stephen Crane 2021 ; Un país bañado en sangre 2023 , en colaboración con Spencer Ostrander, y Baumgartner 2024 . escribió los guiones de las películas Smoke 1995 y Blue in the Face 1995 , en cuya dirección colaboró con Wayne Wang, y los de Lulu on the Bridge 1998 y La vida interior de Martin Frost 2007 , que dirigió en solitario. Editó el libro de relatos Creía que mi padre era Dios 2001 y su obra poética está reunida en el tomo Poesía completa 2012 . Fue también autor de Una vida en palabras 2018 , un volumen que recoge sus conversaciones con la profesora I. B. Siegumfeldt sobre su obra y el oficio de escribir. Recibió numerosos galardones, entre los que destacan el Premio Príncipe de Asturias de las Letras, el Premio Médicis por la novela Leviatán, el Independent Spirit Award por el guion de Smoke y el Premio al mejor libro del año del Gremio de Libreros de Madrid por El libro de las ilusiones. Fue nombrado miembro de la Academia Estadounidense de las Artes y las Letras y Comandante de la Orden de las Artes y las Letras francesa. Su obra está traducida a más de cuarenta idiomas. Murió en Brooklyn el 30 de abril de 2024.
