Kate Chopin fue una escritora estadounidense nacida en 1850 en San Luis, Missouri. Tras enviudar joven y con seis hijos, comenzó a escribir relatos que exploraban la vida de las mujeres y su búsqueda de libertad. Su obra más conocida, El despertar 1899 , causó controversia por su tratamiento del deseo femenino y la autonomía. También publicó cuentos como Historia de una hora y El bebé de Désirée. Aunque fue ignorada en su época, hoy se la reconoce como pionera del feminismo literario y figura clave del naturalismo estadounidense. Murió en 1904, dejando un legado duradero.
