Julian Patrick Barnes nació el 19 de enero de 1946 en Leicester, Inglaterra. Estudió en el City of London School y posteriormente en el Magdalen College de la Universidad de Oxford, donde se graduó en Lenguas Modernas. Trabajó como lexicógrafo en el suplemento del Oxford English Dictionary y más tarde como periodista en medios como The New Statesman, The Sunday Times y The Observer. Publicó su primera novela, Metroland, en 1980, seguida de Antes de conocernos en 1982 y El loro de Flaubert en 1984, que le dio reconocimiento internacional. Ha escrito novelas, ensayos y relatos, y en 2011 recibió el Premio Booker por El sentido de un final.
