DEFOE DANIEL
Daniel Defoe nació en Londres alrededor de octubre de 1660 y murió en Moorfields, Londres, el 24 de abril de 1731. Hijo de James Foe y Alice Marsh, adoptó el De en su apellido en torno a 1700. Educado en la fe presbiteriana con estudios para ministro que abandonó en 1685, se dedicó al comercio, viajó por Europa y afrontó deudas que le condujeron a prisión. En 1684 se casó con Mary Tuffley y tuvo ocho hijos, seis sobrevivientes. Tras ocupar un cargo gubernamental y escribir libelos como El verdadero inglés y El medio más eficaz para con los disidentes, fue arrestado en 1703 y liberado en noviembre gracias a Robert Harley. En 1704 fundó The Review, que consolidó su carrera periodística. En 1719 publicó Robinson Crusoe y luego Moll Flanders, Diario del año de la peste y El perfecto comerciante inglés, obras que le granjearon el título de padre de la novela inglesa.
