Alan Michael Gratz nació el 27 de enero de 1972 en Knoxville, Tennessee. Es autor de más de 19 novelas dirigidas a jóvenes, muchas de ellas centradas en temas históricos, conflictos bélicos y justicia social. Estudió escritura creativa y educación inglesa en la Universidad de Tennessee. Su obra más conocida, Refugiado, ha sido aclamada por su enfoque humano sobre las crisis migratorias. Otros títulos destacados incluyen Code of Honor, Projekt 1065 y Grenade. Gratz ha recibido múltiples reconocimientos por su contribución a la literatura juvenil.
