James Dean, nacido en Fort Payne, Alabama, es un artista autodidacta y creador del personaje infantil Pete the Cat. Desde niño mostró pasión por el dibujo, inspirándose en personajes como Snoopy y Yogi Bear. Estudió ingeniería eléctrica en la Universidad de Auburn y trabajó varios años en Georgia Power antes de dedicarse por completo al arte. A finales de los años noventa comenzó a pintar a su gato Pete, que se convirtió en el protagonista de sus obras. En 2008, junto con Eric Litwin, publicó el primer libro Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes, iniciando una exitosa serie traducida a numerosos idiomas y continuada junto a su esposa Kimberly Dean.
