Gillian Clare Arnold nació en Londres en 1945, hija de James Eric y Joan Emma Arnold. Estudió en la North London Collegiate School y posteriormente en Somerville College, Oxford, donde obtuvo una licenciatura en 1969 y una maestría en 1972. En 1974 completó un doctorado en Filosofía en la Universidad de Sussex. Se casó con Martin Cross en 1967 y tuvo cuatro hijos. Su carrera literaria comenzó en 1979 con la novela The Runaway y continuó con numerosas obras para niños, entre ellas la serie The Demon Headmaster, adaptada por la BBC en 1996 y nuevamente en 2019. Entre sus títulos más reconocidos figuran Chartbreak 1986 , Wolf 1990 y The Great Elephant Chase 1992 , por los que recibió la Medalla Carnegie y el Whitbread Children's Book Award.
