Dav Pilkey nació el 4 de marzo de 1966 en Cleveland, Estados Unidos. Desde niño mostró una gran pasión por el dibujo, aunque fue diagnosticado con TDAH y dislexia, lo que lo llevó a pasar mucho tiempo fuera del aula. Durante esos momentos creaba historias y personajes, como el Capitán Calzoncillos, que más tarde lo harían famoso. Estudió en Kent State University, donde un profesor reconoció su talento y lo animó a escribir e ilustrar. Ha publicado decenas de libros infantiles llenos de humor y acción, incluyendo Dog Man y Cat Kid. Vive en Bainbridge Island con su esposa Sayuri.
