Reconocido por revolucionar la literatura infantil con su estilo artístico basado en el collage, creó más de 40 libros para niños, entre ellos Swimmy, Frederick y Pequeño Azul y Pequeño Amarillo. Su obra combina sencillez visual con profundas fábulas sobre la vida, la comunidad y la creatividad. Falleció en Italia en 1999, dejando un legado que sigue inspirando a lectores de todas las edades.
