Richelle Mead nació el 12 de noviembre de 1976 en Michigan, Estados Unidos. Estudió Humanidades en la Universidad de Michigan, obtuvo una maestría en Ciencias de la Religión en la Universidad del Oeste de Michigan y otra en Magisterio en la Universidad de Washington. Antes de dedicarse a la escritura trabajó como profesora de secundaria en Seattle. En 2007 publicó su primera novela, Succubus Blues, que dio inicio a la saga Georgina Kincaid. Ese mismo año lanzó Vampire Academy, su serie juvenil más conocida, seguida por otras como Dark Swan y Age of X. Actualmente vive en Kirkland, Washington, y ha publicado más de treinta libros de fantasía y ficción juvenil.
