Jeffrey Scott VanderMeer nació en Bellefonte, Pensilvania, en 1968. Es autor de novelas, relatos y ensayos de literatura fantástica y ciencia ficción. Su obra se asocia al movimiento New Weird, que mezcla lo fantástico con lo inquietante y lo ecológico. Alcanzó fama internacional con la Trilogía Southern Reach Aniquilación, Autoridad, Aceptación , cuya primera entrega ganó el Premio Nébula y el Shirley Jackson, y fue adaptada al cine por Alex Garland en 2018. Ha escrito otras novelas como Borne y Shriek: An Afterword. Junto a su esposa Ann VanderMeer ha editado influyentes antologías como The Weird
