Dickens está considerado como el mejor novelista inglés de la época victoriana y uno de los más importantes de la historia de la literatura. Fue el escritor más popular de su tiempo y consiguió atraer a lectores de diferentes clases sociales. En 1824, su padre ingresó en prisión debido a unas deudas, por lo que Charles tuvo que abandonar los estudios y empezar a trabajar en una fábrica con solo doce años. Sin duda, este episodio se ve reflejado en sus obras, que retratan la sociedad de su época y muestran compasión y un preciso conocimiento de las pasiones humanas. Un buen ejemplo de ello es su obra maestra, Grandes esperanzas. A medida que su protagonista, el huérfano Pip, busca su propia identidad, descubre que sus grandes expectativas de riqueza y posición social no son nada comparadas con la lealtad y la misericordia.
